Read below to learn about some of our services.

Cardiac Stress Testing

Cardiac stress tests are used for different reasons depending on the conditions of each patient. Some of the reasons include:

  • To determine how well your heart tolerates exercise and activity
  • To establish a baseline for patients who have cardiac risks such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of coronary artery disease
  • To evaluate the level of chest pain
  • To measure the strength of your heart after a heart attack or surgery

Types of Stress Tests

  • Exercise Stress Test, also called a stress electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) or a treadmill test. The goal of this stress test is to raise your heart rate to determine if blood flow is reduced in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Your heart rate is raised through exercise, such as walking on a treadmill, or by using a medication such as adenosine or dobutamine that increase heart rate and simulates exercise.
  • Imaging Stress Test, also called a nuclear stress test, this is similar to the exercise stress test, but it provides more information using images to show the blood flow to the heart muscle. The test uses a radioactive substance, which mixes with the blood and enters into the cells of the heart muscle. If the substance does not reach the heart, it means the arteries may be blocked or there may be damage to the heart.

Echocardiogram

An echo test, or an echocardiogram test, is a type of ultrasound that allows your doctor to see how well your heart is functioning. This can be used as part of a stress test to gather more information.

Echo tests are usually performed to:

  • Assess the overall function of your heart
  • Determine the presence of many types of heart disease
  • Follow the progress of heart valve disease over time
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of medical or surgery treatments
  • Examine heart murmurs
